With the support of free studio space from the Cowles Center Generating Room, I am working with 5 dancers on my newest piece Trab. The word Trab means sand/soil in Hassaniya (the dialect of Arabic spoken in Mauritania). Growing up in 8 countries in 4 continents and as a global nomad from Mauritania and the U.S., I have always been drawn to sand: the properties of sand (sedimentary rock), the movement of sand (sand dunes), and the poetry of sand (metaphors of time, distance, and scale). Using the framework of sand, my piece explores impermanence. Through contact improvisation scores and set choreography, we will create growing and dissolving landscapes with the human form, exploring growth and decay, construction and crumble, and building up and letting go.
